character history - - - [/blockquote] [/blockquote]richard and claudia edwards fancied themselves as eccentrics living in an old edwardian house in oxfordshire, england. as way of affirming themselves as eccentrics the couple named their three daughters scarlett, tallulah and maeve. tallulah, the middle daughter was born three years after her elder sister and two years before her younger one. the girls, being so close in age, grew up very close to one another and were the best of friends. however, despite their parents apparent eccentricities they thought it best to send their daughters to boarding schools when they turned eleven having previously attended the very good local primary school.
during the ages of eleven to eighteen tallulah lost the bond she had once had with her sisters. tallulah found herself isolated at boarding school, she did not have many friends and as her sisters were in different years to herself they rarely had the oppurtunity to see each other. furthermore scarlett and maeve found themselves far more popular than tallulah, who had a very difficult time going through puberty and was often irritable and bossy with her peers. one thing tallulah did do well in were her studies, she was top of the class in most of her subjects and her parents had big plans for her. they expected, as for all of their daughters, tallulah to go to oxford, for as eccentric and bohieman as they claimed to be they still were elitist and held company with other incredibly rich families were going to oxford or cambridge was expected of the younger generation.
and tallulah wanted to go to oxford for the most part, until she began her A levels. suddenly university didn't seem like the best option, she wanted to travel and see the world. this didn't go down well with her parents, or her school for that matter, and she was still forced to apply to oxbridge and wait to get a place. and of course she did. suddenly she was pride of the family, which came to her as shock as she was often overlook. scarlett had been unsuccessful in her oxbridge application and was now at exeter. while richard and claudia tried not to seem too disappointed it was evident that wasn't really what they had want. tallulah however was more and more turned off by the idea of university. she loved learning but she had spent most of her academic career waiting to get out of school. without her parents knowing she deferred her place and booked a ticket to asia. she only told her parents two weeks before she left.
tallulah had an amazing year travelling around asia and visiting australia and new zeland and was reluctant to return. her parents were waiting and with them was their cunning plan to make sure tallulah didn't run off again. a boy. tallulah had never had a relationship before, boys just didn't really take to her, but it was never something that bothered her. her parents had picked up on her lack of romantic entanglement and introduced her to hector fitzgerald. the son of a family friend, convinced that if tallulah fell in love she would stay in england to be with hector and take her place up at oxford. there was one flaw, tallulah hated hector and booked a ticket to miami to visit a friend and escape. but they won't give up, her parents are convinced hector is perfect for tallulah and are even heckling tallulah while she is in america.

caleb and mia had been friends for longer than he cared to remember. at every milestone in caleb's adolescent life mia had always been there, there wasn't an important memory in his mind that didn't include mia - even if she was just standing on the sidelines. before stella came along caleb and mia made the perfect duo, they were crazy, spontaneous and reckless together. she would turn up at his house late at night and they would just go out and do anything. life with mia was unpredictable and he loved it that way. he was young, fun and really didn't give a fuck and he found a kindred spirit in mia. they were two peas in a pod. but after stella was born everything changed and to be honest caleb was missing his fellow pea now, the pod felt empty.
only something massive could have split these two up and it didn't get worse than the blow up they had over stella. caleb trusted mia with his life, that went without saying. indeed caleb trusted his life with most people, he was far too laid back. but stella's life? hell, he didn't even trust himself with it. how the hell was he to trust anyone else? callie had wanted stella christened, something caleb wasn't a big follower of but if callie wanted it for their baby then he would go along with it, and that meant choosing godparents. callie had told him he could pick one and she would pick the other. as soon as he told mia about it it became apparent that she thought she should be stella's god mom. she was his best friend right? and caleb would have let her, if it weren't for something niggling at the back of his mind.
you see, he knew mia inside and out. he knew everything about her, good and bad. and it was the bad that bugged him. mia wasn't responsible, she had a 'fuck it' attitude and could be rather selfish when she wanted. plus, she was young. really young. if something happened to him and callie could she really be expected to raise stella? caleb never meant to hurt her, he was being responsible. stella meant too much to him, he couldn't bare to leave her with anyone - including mia - just for a second. but mia had taken it the wrong way, she blew up about how he didn't trust her and whole load of other things. she didn't understand because she wasn't a parent, she didn't get it. he'd been angry for a while, but then he started to miss her. he couldn't bare being without his best friend, regardless of their fight. stella was his everything but she wasn't a substitute for mia.
mia smiled and waved and caleb could feel himself grinning like a cheshire cat. stupid, but he couldn't help it. this was the most communication he'd had with mia in what felt like forever. god did he miss her. he watched as she got herself another coffee and waited for her to join him at the table. he really hoped she would, it was weird seeing her and everything but he found himself overcome with this need to just, well, be with her. however strange that may seem. she took a seat in front of him and caleb didn't say much as he watched her stir his coffee. "hey," she said, "how are you doing?" caleb was glad she wasn't going to make this awkward, he couldn't deal with awkward. he shifted stella on his knee and said "i'm doing alright,” trying to sound as casual as possible and not as though he was about to break into the hallelujah chorus. how about you? he asked, then quickly moved his coffee futher away as stella made a grab for it.
"she's getting so big," mia remarked and caleb nodded, he looked at stella and was unable to hold in his laughter at her chocolate covered face and innocent expression. he grabbed a napkin and gently began to wipe it away. "i know, she's growing up fast." stella had recently turned one, of course mia had not been there because they had not been on speaking terms. but caleb was sorry she had missed it.
