character history - - - [/blockquote] [/blockquote]So sometimes people start out one way, and end up another. Such is the case with Draco Andrew Malone. He was born what he used to consider "normal" (though, as he would tell you, normal is relative, and his behavior now is, to him, "normal".) He had a mother, and a father, who were married at the time (and still are, as far as he knows), and yes, he was a planned baby- their one and only. His mother was a paramedic, and his father was a firefighter/paramedic. They had hectic careers that didn't often have them home together for extended periods of time. Still, they wanted a child, which was when Draco came along. But because of their careers, they would feel guilty to keep having kids that they would only have to dump on friends, family, and other baby-sitters, because neither of them would give up their job. Anyway, Draco was an average baby in every way. He was born on his projected due date, weighing 6 pounds and 9 ounces. He had a head full of his father's dark hair, and he was perfectly healthy.
His childhood continued as anyone else's would. He started pre-K, then Kindergarten, and continued on through his school years, toward high school. As he started to get older, Draco would spend the night occasionally at the fire house with his father, and sometimes even got to ride in the engine when they got a call. He wasn't allowed to do anything, of course, but it was still nice just to watch. Sometimes, he'd be standing just feet away while his father was putting out a fire, but what fascinated him was what was going on the other direction, where paramedics would be working to save the lives of people who got pulled out of the fire. This got him interested in medicine as a profession. So he worked his ass off in high school, and graduated with a very high GPA, which got him into a great college- though not quite Ivy League- on a full-ride academic scholarship. He attended in the fall after graduating high school, and got all settled into his dorm, adjusting quickly to life away from home, and made some new friends, joined organizations soon after arriving, and was doing well academically early on.
So you're probably wondering at what point he became the modern-day Draco. This girl came along... Well, there were several girls that happened to be interested in Draco here, but only one truly caught his eye. He asked her out, and at first she denied him. But he was persistent. He kept asking, and eventually agreed. This was a whole new world in and of itself for him- he'd dated around quite a bit in high school, and often the relationship ended because he just couldn't be faithful. Point being, if a girl ever rejected his first attempt to ask them out, he moved on immediately. This was different- something was different about her, compared to everyone else he'd been with. Things started off slowly- another first for Draco- and progressed. At first it was just meeting on the weekends for coffee, but then it got more intense. They would meet every chance they got, between classes, and hanging out in each others' dorms in the evenings once classes were done. By the end of their freshman year in college, they were inseparable. It was the same story during sophomore year, too- they were together every free second, and with both of them doing pre-med, it just made it that much easier to hang out because they had basically the same homework. The summer after sophomore year is when it all changed. They were going on a road trip, all the way to the West Coast. When they got to the beach in California, Draco had a plan- and a ring. But fate had other plans, and they didn't take Draco's into account. Somewhere along the way, while they were on a massive highway, it was raining hard- hard enough to where the windshield wipers had to be going full-speed just for Draco to be able to get momentary glances at the road. He was about to pull over and wait the storm out when something- a very drunk driver- slammed into the front of the car.
The next thing Draco knew, he was waking up with his legs pinned under the steering wheel, bleeding from various cuts and such on his body, and it was pretty much the same with his girlfriend- except she was way worse off. Most of the impact was on her side of the car, and so she was pretty bad off. Draco called her name, and got a faint answer. He wriggled and squirmed until his legs finally came free, and quickly examined her, ignoring the pounding in his own head, and the fact that his left leg was obviously broken and hurt like a motherfucker. His girlfriends was going to die if he didn't get help. Draco wondered, angrily, why nobody had called 9-1-1 for them, but then realized it was still raining, and the road was barely visible, let alone the cars in the crash- which, thankfully for other motorists, skidded fully into the shoulder. He pulled out his own cell phone, but of course, it wasn't getting a signal. So he did all he could do. He put pressure on the worst of the girl's wounds and kept talking to her, struggling to keep her awake. Eventually, they both knew she'd bled too much, and without help on the way, it was, well, hopeless. She asked him to kiss her. So he did- until he actually felt the life drain out of her. Then he laid his head in her lap and cried. He eventually passed out from his own blood loss. The next thing after that he remembered was waking up in the hospital- shortly after passing out, the rain let up, and someone saw the wreckage and called 9-1-1. The drunk driver had only minor injuries- because his car was much larger than Draco's- and Draco's worst injury was a badly broken leg. The driver's wounds were treated and he was carted off to jail. Draco's were treated, and he went to his girlfriend's funeral in a full-leg cast.
Draco threw himself into school. He discarded his social life, participating in only the organizations that would get him into med school, and spending all his free time reading and re-reading textbooks. He scored high on the MCAT and got into Johns Hopkins med school, where he attended after getting his undergrad degree in biology. He graduated Johns Hopkins with honors, and shortly thereafter moved to Miami, not because he particularly liked the beach or social scene, but because a prominent hospital offered him a job- which he took. He's still working there. This is all fine and dandy, and it explains part of him. But how did he get started in his... well, extra-curricular (so to speak) activities? One day, Draco passed a man on the street as he took a walk, and could swear he recognized the face. So when he got home, he looked it up. Yes, it was the drunk driver- released from jail, and currently residing in Miami. Draco didn't even think about what his next course of action would be. Correction- he thought about it only so far as to plan it out carefully, but never debated whether or not to do it. He got the necessary supplies, found an empty warehouse, and made sure no unexpected visitors would catch him in the act. And then he went to where the man worked. The man was just closing up his antique shop when Draco surprised him from behind, injecting him with a paralyzer, and quickly stuffed the man into the back seat of his car, and drove to the abandoned warehouse, where he killed the man, and cleaned up all the evidence. Nobody ever found the man. Hell, nobody ever actually suspected he was dead- Draco made sure everyone thought the man was just skipping out on the payments for his shop, which were months behind. Draco felt better but not... definitely not completely better. So many more people existed out there that had done some terrible things, taken innocent lives... And Draco was always a strong proponent of "an eye for an eye"...
