Benjamin Zander Georgiades was born to a large Greek family in Pennsylvania. He was the middle child, preceded by one boy and followed by one girl. Their house was always full of people and food. All three children grew up quite happily and were very close. The closest, however, were obviously Benji and his sister Dora. The two were three years apart, and from the day she was born Benji assumed complete guardian responsibility over his sister. He was always there to look out for her and protect her. Dora, as well as his mother and later his aunts, would call Benji ‘Superman’. When it was time for college, the boy hadn’t planned on going out of state, but was lucky enough to get a scholarship to Miami University.

Early into his Freshman year Benji’s eyes began to act funny. He suddenly found himself squinting too see boards and read textbooks. He went to the doctor and was given glasses, but his vision only got worse. After going through three prescriptions in seven months, the boy went to a different doctor. He was diagnosed with a rare form of cataracts. Treatment has delayed the disease, and there’s hope that he will sustain some of his vision, but it’s been estimated that by the time he’s twenty-three he will be legally blind. Benji’s family begged for him to come home when they found out, but he insisted on finishing his degree. In truth, Benji didn’t want his family to see him as weak. He didn’t want to be taken care of. Though everything he demands he keep his independence, to the point of foolish stubbornness.
