character history - - - [/blockquote] [/blockquote]The Aphrodite of today is not the baby boy born twenty-five years ago to Joan and Alejandro Arsenio. The baby boy born then was Andrew, and became Aphrodite later in life, when he was done denying himself the liberty of being himself. Joan and Alejandro could never have dreamed their only child would end up like this. When they had a boy, they both envisioned an athlete, the kind of kid who was on nearly every school sports team imaginable, and yet somehow still managed to get straight A's. They realized early on that this wouldn't be the case, however. Andrew was a very different child, always going to dolls instead of toy trucks. While it's natural for little kids to play with their mother's clothes and make-up, Andrew was doing it way more often than his peers. Joan and Alejandro figured they could whip him into shape by signing him up for all the peewee sports teams that his schedule allowed. But they soon realized that sports just weren't for him- he always seemed to be the one on the bench, the coach not wanting to throw the game, or, if Andrew actually played, he always found himself on the bottom of a dog pile, and wound up in the ER too many times to count. So they gave up on sports, but kept tight reigns on him anyway- they severely punished him every time he did something "abnormal".
Andrew knew for as long as he could remember that he wasn't normal. He liked boys. He liked dresses, and girls' clothes. He hated sports. He wasn't like other boys his age. But when he put on- or tried to put on- his mother's dresses, he felt... he felt right. Of course, with the closed-mindedness of his parents, he was understandably scared to come out. He knew he was gay. They didn't. They guessed, but were in an incredible amount of denial, and if they had any confirmation, Andrew was scared. So he started dating boys in secret, and wearing dresses and such whenever he was home alone. And thus, Aphrodite was born. After several failed relationships because he couldn't come out to his parents, Aphrodite got sick of all the secrecy and forced himself to tell his parents. Obviously, they freaked, and he ran away that night. He snuck back in that night and stole some of his mother's clothes, then ran back away wearing a skirt and heels. For several weeks, he was missing, and by the time the police found him in an abandoned building with other runaways, Aphrodite had been with so many other "confused" boys that his head was spinning. He was brought home, and his parents managed to pulls some strings so he was not charged.
But that's not the end of his story. He was only fifteen when that happened- and that was ten years ago. He started getting sick- really sick, for no apparent reason. If he got a cold, instead of going away in a few days, it would last an incredibly long time. His parents got wind of that and had him brought home so he could see a proper doctor. That was when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive. Shortly thereafter, he started AZT, which he's been on since. Shortly before Junior year started, he and his parents got into a huge fight about him and female clothes, and so after that he was sent to a boarding school in Miami, where he stayed until he graduated, and ended up just living there. He went to college here, for theater, and ended up getting a job at the local high school teaching drama. Her employers believe she is actually female, which is the story she sticks to, for fear she will get fired otherwise.
