i heard that you were trouble
BUT I COULDN'T RESIST
ameliah marie barton stepped from the bright yellow taxi, another night, another dinner. she could seriously begin to grow tired of these things, especially when she had to smile and pretend everything was okay between her father and her. as if everyone didn’t already know that maurice william barton was anything but proud of his only daughter. it was in fact interesting to watch the two converse with fake smiles, though liah’s was always more pained than maurice’s. quickly liah brushed off her black designer dress, careful not to crease it or ruin it before she made her entrance into the restaurant. tonight, it would be her father, another family and their son, and a couple of foreign business associates. if it wasn’t for the fact that she would one day inherit the business from her father, liah would have set about destroying him. as it was, she couldn’t because it was in her interests to just fake the love she should feel for her father. unfortunately, having been practically abandoned by him for her whole life, yes her whole life, she had grown to dislike the self absorbed man.
liah’s face briefly showed her loss and sadness at having never known her father very well. most of the time when subjects arose about her father, she gave vague comments, not sure what was exactly happening with him at the time. it always made her look inattentive to his life and for that she hated him, but what could she do? the only reason she was doing this was because she wanted something out of him. liah composed her face, making sure that it held the right amount of smile before she stepped along the pavement, up the stairs and towards the doors of the familiar restaurant. when she arrived at the double doors, a man in livery opened one of them for her, bowing as he did so. at this, liah’s fixed smile became real and she murmured her thanks. even though she could be incredibly blunt sometimes, she could be nice too….sometimes. inwardly she shook her head, if her friends could hear that one they’d roll around laughing, they’d say liah was a bitch. not that she minded, down deep she knew she was, and she couldn’t help it. not really.
liah stepped past the man, her head held high and her face once again fixed. it was hard to show a genuine smile around her father, but hopefully there would actually be someone interesting there to speak to. entering into the small hallway that led into the actual restaurant, she allowed herself to be taken in hand by the maitre d. having been in miami for almost six months now, she was familiar with most of the posh restaurants in the area. as she walked, liah caught sight of herself in a full length mirror that was actually meant as an adornment. critically she studied herself for a brief moment. her slim, curvy figure was encased in a strapless black one of a kind designer dress, killer black stilettos adorned her feet, adding to her just above average height and she held a black vintage chanel clutch in her left hand. the outfit was simple but it was elegant and left bare her long, shapely legs. as for her long brunette locks, she had put them up in a loose chignon, leaving a coupe of tendrils loose to frame her face.
quickly she looked at her makeup, making sure that it hadn’t smudged in the ride over. her black eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow and her clear lip gloss kept up her elegant yet understated look. then the image of herself was gone, the brief pause she had taken to study herself over, and she was being led over to the table her father most favoured within the restaurant. it was unsurprising that her father had probably paid a lot to get the table when it would have been booked for months in advance. it was also unsurprising that her father would be so selfish as to do that rather than look for something else. as she approached the table, her father stood, signaling to the rest of the table to stand too. liah took a deep breath, smiling quickly at the maitre d before turning back to her father and letting herself breath out quietly. soon she was at his side, and smiling fixedly, she allowed him to kiss each of her cheeks before he gently took hold of her shoulders and smiled down at her. ”hello ameliah,” he said warmly.
inwardly liah winced but she kept her fixed smile up, a mask to hide the pain she was feeling. why couldn’t her father really be like this all the time? it was sad, but even at nineteen, liah still wanted to please her father. down deep she knew that this would never happen, but she could still hope, right? liah inwardly chastised herself. you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, not even the trick of loving his own child. feeling emotional, liah shut down her feelings and turned her smile up brighter so that no one would notice the fact that she was hurting so much. having ignored the table of people as she walked towards her father, liah now turned to face them, it was going to be a long night, she was sure of it.
