[/blockquote]nathaniel james harrison drew up at the park, his eyes surveying the green scenery in front of him. it had been a long time since he’d set foot in the place. hell, he’d been about fifteen, sixteen, when he’d last seen this place. maybe if his father had been able to stay away from alcohol he would have been able to play there more, but with the bruises he got from his father on a daily basis, he’d decided to become more anti social. nathan shook his head letting the memories clear. he was here today to meet with an old friend of his, Thomas whom he hadn’t seen in a while. tom had been the only one to know about the fights at home and he’d been the only one to understand. like nathan’s dad, tom’s dad had gotten drunk every night too. but where as nathan had a mum, tom’s had taken off a long time ago leaving her son with an abusive ass of a man. in nathan’s opinion, that was downright low, but he’d never said that of course. tom was his best mate, still was in a way.
besides his siblings, tom was the one person in the world who knew him best. and over the years, even though nathan had left to go and make it on the circuit, they’d kept in contact, hence the reason he had come to the park today to meet up with him. currently, he was an owner of some hotels and was making quite a bit of money out of it. nathan turned the key in the ignition and raised the handbrake. once he had done this, he grabbed the keys and swiftly he opened the driver door. by the time he had slipped out into the sunshine, nathan had gained a lot of attention from the dads in the playground nearest. not only did the men recognize him, they also recognized the kind of car he had. nathan sighed and turned to see a group of women staring and whispering, obviously about him. oh great, he thought, maybe me and tom should meet somewhere else next time. he looked around again, trying to spot his friend so that he could be distracted from the attention he was getting.
normally, nathan would have smiled at the people, acting all cool and relaxed but right then, faced with so many painful memories, he could only keep his face in a still mask. suddenly a buzzing sound from his back pocket interrupted his thoughts, and nathan slipped his blackberry from his back pocket while his eyes narrowed behind his sun glasses. sliding the top part up, nathan read the message and frowned. ’can’t make it. got an emergency meeting. call you tonight’. the message stared back at him from the small screen and nathan closed it and slipped it back into his back pocket. as he did so he caught sight of the black band around his wrist. it was a simple old leather band with a bronze crest on it. this wasn’t his family crest, it was actually the crest of his mentor driver and hero, james smith. he’d gotten that when he’d won his first international race, that was four years ago now. nathan walked forward, his eyes surveying the park behind his sun glasses.
now that he was here he didn’t want to go just yet, it wasn’t even like he was going home or anything, he was just going back to his hotel. sitting on a park bench, nathan took off his sunglasses and slipped them so that they hung from his shirt front. the sun shone down on miami, leaving the area warm and sunny. it was almost like one of the movies where everything seemed perfect, like that movie stepford wives. inwardly nathan shuddered. that had been one creepy ass movie, one that he hoped to never watch again. the only reason he had watched it in the first place was the fact that he thought it would include some cool scenes of gore and macabre. unfortunately, it had not and had turned into one of those weird soppy movies that only chicks would ever understand. inwardly he rolled his eyes, chick flicks had always scared him a little. it was like this magic mix, add one playboy/rebel guy to one sweet/naïve girl and whalah! you get a perfect love match. yeah right, he thought with a small smirk.
nathan turned his head and saw with dismay that one of the women from the group he had seen before was coming towards him with a scary look of intent that he knew well. having been chased after by a lot of women, nathan was by now used to and could easily recognize the look. getting up, he walked confidently over towards the playground so appearing that he didn’t know someone had been about to approach him. looking back over his shoulder, he saw that the woman was heading back to her friends. he sighed in relief but it turned into a small sound that sounded suspisciously like ‘what the fuck?’ though since he said it under his breath it could barely be heard. he’d made this sound mainly because a little boy had run into his legs. obviously he had not been looking where he was going and since neither had nathan, the two had collided. it was then that nathan noticed the fact that he had his hands on the boys shoulders to steady him. nathan’s smiled. ”sorry about that.”
